“The USHPA Free Flight Film Festival showcases the best hang gliding and paragliding has to offer, from imagery captured utilizing a Cineflex camera stabilization system mounted to a helicopter, to a first-person GoPro masterpiece shot by professional pilots,” said Martin Palmaz, Executive Director of USHPA. “This festival highlights the heart of hang gliding and paragliding, from projects working with communities, to flying and camping over vast mountain ranges, to aerobatics, to a lone falconer and his pursuit of the perfect flight. There is something for everyone.”

Films included in the 2018 Film Festival showing:
  1. Building Dreams
  2. Inspired
  3. Maters, Misfits of Moab
  4. The Perfect Flight
  5. North Of Known
Hang gliding and paragliding are a combination of adventure sport and aviation. Pilots fly light and non-motorized foot-launch aircraft both recreationally and competitively. Hang gliding pilots hang prone in a harness, suspended from the airframe, and exercise control by shifting their body weight. Most modern hang gliders are made of an aluminum alloy frame covered with synthetic sailcloth to form a wing. Paragliding pilots fly lightweight aircraft that have no rigid primary structure and resemble elliptical parachutes. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing that is comprised of a large number of interconnected baffled cells. Hang gliders and paragliders can travel hundreds of miles on rising columns of air, called thermals, soar for hours in the wind pushed upward by coastal terrain, or simply fly down from a mountain in calm, still, air.

Weekend Mountain Flying Forecast

The forecast looks pretty good. It will be mostly sunny and comfortably warm, at least until the sun goes down. Wind will be out of the West at 7 mph. That is fine for PG pilots, but a little light for HG pilots to take off. I like at least 10 mph at the Palomar launch. However the thermal forecast is good, 450 fpm. Thermals will add to the general wind and will make for good take off cycles. Just be patient. Wind will be Westerly all over the county, so the wind aloft will be light Westerly. It should be possible to get to 5,000' around launch, and to 7,000' back at the towers.

On Sunday the wind goes East again. At Laguna wind will be moderate, 12 mph gusting to 18. The upper launch may be ok. Lift at 500 fpm will get to 7,000'. At Horse wind will be East all day. At the Palomar launch wind will be 6 mph from the WestSouthWest. But watch out, at ridge top the wind will be from the East, at least 10 mph.

Bill H.

from NOAA:

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Light west wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

ABOUT SDHGPA
The San Diego Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (SDHGPA) is a hang gliding and paragliding club dedicated to the promotion and preservation of foot launched soaring (non motorized "free flight") in San Diego County. SDHGPA is a local chapter of the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, USHPA. We work collaboratively with land owners and governing agencies at the local level to keep our primary flying sites open by maintaining, insuring, purchasing, regulating, and monitoring our launch sites and landing zones. Our guiding principle is that all foot launched pilots of hang gliders and paragliders alike share common goals and interests best served by a united effort to promote flying safety, education, and good community relations in San Diego County. We support hang gliding and paragliding at the national level through the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (USHPA) and concurrent membership in that organization is the one and only club membership requirement.
History: The SDHGPA is the Oldest and Longest Running Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club and Organization in San Diego and Southern California originally organized in 1973.

October Update & 2018 in review

10/20/2018

San Diego Free Flyers, we’ve got a bunch to catch up on!
Year in Review
It’s been a rad year of learning for me. I spent most of this last year flying Blossom with the intent to build my basic XC skills of thermal flying and mini-XC legs over to the Cap & back.
The good news is that Blossom is still as technical and and fun and challenging/dangerous as it ever was, the better news is that I’m still in one piece to be able to enjoy it thanks to a bit of luck and a lot of guidance from the local pilot community.
Picture
Article by Nik Hawks
I should probably start naming names: Bill Davis was the one who saw the opportunity to shove me into a thermal over at Little Black, and I’ll probably always remember his super simple and intensely shared advice over the radio: “Keep turning, ya knucklehead!”
As funny as it sounds, that’s really all you need to get started with thermalling, although that’s just the start of the invisible elevator game.
Chris Cote spent lots of time at Blossom with me going over what he looks for and how he understands the sky from the ground and from the riser-feel once he’s skyward. It’s always nice to get the perspective of someone who has put in a ton of time in a very short period (and who holds more than one of the local site records.)
Ivan Guajardo was also more patient than he needed to be when it came to talking through the first steps of Blossom and the crossing to El Capitan, and Mike Dowdall has been about the most generous and encouraging pilot I’ve met on launch.
Yes, Phil Russman was there barking his occasional gems of wisdom, Paton always drops the technical flying info-bombs, and before he got sucked into buying a house, Robert Michiels was a fairly constant wingman.
I got to enjoy the glory of a hike with Dave Metzgar and hear his gravelly version of what’s right and wrong in the world of paragliding, which is one of those experiences that just makes you want to hear more.
On a few car rides to club meetings or out to Horse with Josh Gelb I got an exceptional and interesting view into club history, including many lines that are rarely flown now and the genesis of the Palomar launch.

Blossom Update
Speaking of launches and sites, the big news right now (end of October) is the fight to keep Blossom free of the massive El Monte Valley Sand Mine project. If you’d like to help (and you bloody well should pitch in on this one), cruise over to the Google doc
https://docs.google.com/document/d/13U-JA09VjHxhQSNhghwpAge0b3XXZeCv2S2l5mBL4kg/edit?usp=sharing
Will you pitch in to help maintain this beauty?

This view may be forever changed if the proposed sand mine goes in, with impacts ranging from lowered visibility, Valley Fever exposure (no joke, I have several friends who got this NON-CURABLE disease), environmental damage, and up to 170 trucks per day on that tiny little road snaking through the middle of the valley.

Here's what you can do to help. Yes, it involves reading & writing. You can do this!

Hit the link above and send in a written statement to the listed contacts prior to the Oct 25th meeting and submit it to the county planning commission.

Why SDHGPA & Why it Maters
Finally, an exhortation to those of you who either haven’t renewed your membership yet OR who are new and wondering what a membership actually gets you.
One of the reasons San Diego is such an excellent and reliable place to fly is that we lean heavily on just a few people to do all the paperwork and admin “stuff” to keep our sites open.
Access to Horse, the permission to fly Palomar, the ability to put up weather stations, keeping sites maintained, the website itself, and keeping us an insured & recognized club in good standing with USPHA is frankly a huge PITA.
There are two ways to contribute, one is easy, one is hard.
The easy way is to take the money you’d spend on your sweetie for a cheap dinner once a year and pay your membership dues. That’s a one-time action that allows the 4 or 5 people who do 98% of the volunteer work that keeps San Diego such a great flying area to keep on slaving away on our behalf.
Oh, and if you find anything other than a cheap dinner in San Diego for under $40, let me know!
The hard way is to volunteer to actually do all that paperwork, and there is a TON!
While I’d encourage you to volunteer, it’s far easier and also pretty effective to just pay your dues. We’ve got about 100 pilots who haven’t renewed yet, which represents a good chunk of our yearly income as a club. If you fly any more than 3 times a year it’s basically a no-brainer to continue supporting.

Finally, if you’re new and thinking about joining SDHGPA, please do!
Most club members are happy to chat with you and share as much as we know, along with introducing you to potential flying buddies and mentors. You can eat $40 worth of tacos at any one of our fly-ins, so if you’re a hungry pilot, think of coming to multiple fly-ins as basically being paid to fly and eat.

At $40 per year for a full annual membership, this is about the most valuable spend you’ll make this year. Ping us with any questions, and see ya in the sky!
Cheers,
Nik Hawks

Work Party & Fly - Thank You

1/11/2016

Here is a Big Thank You ! ! !
to all those that showed up for the Double Work Party's this past weekend.

With all of your efforts The Horse LZ, Horse Launch and Glider Point Trail Up Little Black have never looked better!

Horse Work Party & Flying - Saturday Jan 9th
A little over 25 Pilots showed up for the work party and made quick work of what looked to be a daunting task of of restoring the 2.25 acre Horse Postage Stamp LZ that had become over run with LZ Tribbles.

Once the LZ was largely complete, we moved our efforts to launch. The main launch windsock was rebuilt and replaced. Erosion ruts and rock snags on Launch were removed or filled in then smoothed out and compacted to minimize future erosion.

Post detailing the Launch, GH headed down to remove the big erosion ruts and 4x4 damage in the LZ along with putting on a Zamboni finish to the LZ.

Those out at Horse were rewarded with great but cold flying conditions on Saturday that lasted and actually improved into a great glass off into sunset!

Back Mountain Open Space Glider Port - (Little Black)
- Glider Point Trail
SDHGPA Work Party - Sunday January 10th
We also had a good turnout on Sunday, with about 20 pilots working from 9 am to 2 pm at the Black Mountain Open Space. With these efforts, the Glider Point Trail has been greatly restored and has a much better route visibility than it had before.

The San Diego Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association has donated not only their time and effort, but over 100 Native plants and some Habitat restoration area signs to the Open Space Native habitat restoration efforts. (A few of the Native plants to be planted were started by seed and donated by Beth Mather).

To prepare and allow for native plant re-growth, over 30 trail cuts were blocked and the trail was delineated in areas where there was not an obvious path to follow. Trail erosion and wash-outs were also repaired. Water diverts were then added to discourage future washouts.
In addition to all the trail work on this past Sunday; over 40 native plants were planted and hand watered (buckwheat, artemisia, black sage, a couple of sumacs and a few baccharis). An additional 50-60 planting basins were also dug in preparation for larger growing natives ordered but that have not yet arrived (sumac, lemonade berry, and mission manzanita).  All of the plants and planting basins were marked by flags color coded to final growing size.

The SDHGPA will be scheduling a second round of planting in a couple of weeks along with checking on the trail for some post rain follow up work.
Some flew After all the work,  but conditions were fairly light on Sunday

The Follow-on Little Black Work Party is scheduled for:
Sat, Jan 30th 2016
Little Black Site Preservation Work Party & Fly - Part 2
Sat, Jan 30th 2016
Meet in LZ 9:00
Where: 14811 Black Mountain Rd San Diego, CA 92127

USHPA - Free Flight Forever

12/11/2015

USHPA has made a major update to the Free Flight Forever information web page.
There you will find a very detailed breakdown and answers to most all questions that we would have as pilots.

Picture

We will be discussing this at our next SDHGPA meeting ( Thursday Dec 17th)  as to what all this means to us as local San Diego Pilots.

More will be posted on what we decide to do as a USHPA Chapter in our Meeting Minutes.

Until that Time,

The Most Common Question we get at the Local Level is:
Q:
How does this ability to Insure or not Insure ourselves effect us. Couldn't we just fly anyways on Public and private lands?
A:
Pilot Insurance and or Site Insurance has been a major negotiation factor in securing and preserving our ability to Fly at all of our SDHGPA Sites. Carrying and Maintaining Pilot and Site Insurance is in all of our Recreational Use Agreements,  Special Use Agreements, and Use Permits.

Also see:   Background on the Insurance Situation (what the heck happened?) Updated 12.10.15 (Why does insurance matter?) on the http://ushpa.aero/freeflightforever.asp page

SDHGPA Palomar Mt Agreements and Land Preservation

11/26/2013

The San Diego Paragliding and Hang Gliding Association (SDHGPA) continues to work positively with landowners throughout San Diego County, developing land use agreements that are mutually beneficial to the flying community and the land owners who grant them permission to use their property for unpowered flying activities.

The Pala Band of Mission Indians and other landowners on Mt Palomar have entered into agreements with SDHGPA for continued use of the Palomar Mt launching and landing sites. The Pala Executive Committee feels that Hang Gliding and Paragliding is a positive and compatible use of tribal lands, adding scenic beauty as pilots fly silently over the valley, sharing the skies with native birds. The SDHGPA has satisfied land owners’ concerns of liability related to their recreational uses.

Pala and other landowners expect the SDHGPA group to be responsible shepherds of the land, and SDHGPA pilots have agreed to work to deter illegal users from defacing the land (primarily by reporting such use in an effort to enable enforcement), and to attempt to repair damages done in the past by unauthorized use. These collaborative efforts to restore and maintain the natural beauty of the areas used as unpowered flying sites are a benefit to both pilots and the land owners who have granted them access.

The SDHGPA has started a major Mt Palomar clean-up and Site Preservation effort to return the Palomar flying site to its natural beauty after years of disrespectful misuse of the land by other unauthorized recreationalists. SDHGPA Palomar clean-up and Site Preservation efforts will be documented in the Following Photo Album ( Palomar Mt Site Building - Preservation 2013 Album) and on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SDHGPA

SDHGPA Firmly reiterates USHPA statement regarding Dell Schanze and his operations

7/3/2013

In response to Fox 5 article and other press inquiries regarding the tragic fatal Powered Paragliding Instruction accident in Imperial Beach under the direction of Dell Schanze on JULY 1, 2013 http://fox5sandiego.com/2013/07/01/paraglider-death-sparks-controversy/#axzz2XvxGtMBM

(Yes this comes just months after after Dell Schanze single handily gets Paragliging and Powerered Paragliding banned in Imperial Beach) http://www.10news.com/news/extreme-sports-enthusiast-gets-sport-banned-in-ib

The San Diego Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association (SDHGPA) extends its sincere condolences to the family of Henry Ho and Firmly reiterates USHPA's statements regarding Dell Schanze and his operations under any other alias including (SuperDell, Dell Buck Schanze, World Powered Paragliding Association, WPPA, totallyawesome.com, Flat Top Paramotor, or u-turnusa.com).  u-turnusa.com should not be confused with the legitimate brand and legitimate dealers of u-turn.com.

SDHGPA encourages people interested in learning to fly hang gliders, paragliders, or power paragliders (PPG) to seek out trained instructors holding valid USHPA or USPPA Instructor Appointments. This would exclude Dell Schanze, and his flight school operations and self created World Powered Paragliding Association.

More specifically: Dell Schanze and his flight school operations are not sanctioned by USHPA. Dell Schanze is also not a current USHPA member in good standing. His Prior Ratings and Tandem Appointment have lapsed or have were revoked by USHPA in June of 2012.  Dell Schanze has never has never held any USHPA Basic Instructor or Advanced Instructor appointments. He has held no USHPA appointments since June of 2010.

Further, Dell Schanze and his flight school operations, as non USHPA members, are not welcome at SDHGPA maintained and Site Insured flying sites (Little Black, Blossom, Horse, Laguna, Big Black, Palomar, Blossom, and Otay Mesa) or in a 4 mile vicinity of those sites for any flight or ground handling activities.

Paragliding (PG) and Powered Paragliding (PPG) flight is conducted under FAR Part 103, and is deemed to be self regulating. The FAA and Pilot Community Recognized Self Regulation body for our sports is the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (USHPA) and/ or the United States Powered Paragliding Association (USPPA) . All competent and respected instructors are members of one or both of these two organizations and abide by their self regulation guidelines for each respective discipline.

Please Reference USHPA’s Official Statement on 7-3-2013 at: http://www.ushpa.aero/  or below.

Steve Rohrbaugh
SDHGPA President
(SDHGPA is a Local Chapter of USHPA)

USHPA’s Official Statement posted on 7-3-2013  : http://www.ushpa.aero
Inquiries Concerning a Recent Accident: 7/3/2013 The United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, Inc., (USHPA) has received a number of inquiries concerning a paragliding fatality that occurred recently at Imperial Beach, California, specifically asking what we know about Dell Schanze and any paragliding operations he may have been conducting.

The news reports of that incident indicate that the family of the student, Henry Ho, believes that he was under the instruction of Dell Schanze at the time of the fatality. According to news reports, Dell Schanze denies that he was instructing at the time.

USHPA extends its sincere condolences to the family of Henry Ho.

Dell Schanze has not been a member of USHPA since June of 2012, when USHPA made a determination that because of his conduct he was no longer eligible for membership in USHPA. Refusing membership to Dell Schanze came in response to a number of incidents demonstrating a disregard for the rules governing safe flying practices, and conduct determined to be materially and seriously prejudicial to the purposes of USHPA to promote the sport of paragliding and to promote safety and safe flying practices. Dell Schanze remains ineligible for membership in USHPA.

Prior to June of 2010, Dell Schanze held a USHPA appointment as a Tandem Instructor. That appointment lapsed in June 2010 due to non-renewal, a process which includes demonstration of proficiency and currency. He has never held any USHPA Basic Instructor or Advanced Instructor appointments. He has held no USHPA appointments since June of 2010.

News reports indicate that Henry Ho was not wearing a helmet at the time of his fatal accident. USHPA regulations require that paragliding students under the instruction of USHPA appointed instructors wear helmets at all times.

USHPA chapters are reminded that Dell Schanze is not a USHPA member and as such he should not be permitted to fly or instruct at USHPA insured sites.

USHPA supports chapters using all legal means to prevent non-members from endangering USHPA insured sites by flying or offering instruction at those sites. USHPA supports officials investigating situations where actions of pilots are in violation of USHPA SOPs, have caused site closures, or constitute other conduct materially and seriously prejudicial to the sport.

People interested in learning to fly hang gliders or paragliders are encouraged to seek out trained instructors holding valid USHPA Instructor Appointments. You can check whether an instructor holds a USHPA Instructor Appointment by consulting the USHPA website at http://www.ushpa.aero

Paragliding (PG) and Powered Paragliding (PPG) flight is conducted under the FAA FAR Part 103, and is deemed to be self regulating. The FAA and Pilot Community's Recognized Self Regulation body for our sports is the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (USHPA) and/ or the United States Powered Paragliding Association (USPPA).  All competent and respected instructors are members of one or both of these two organizations and abide by their self regulation guidelines for each respective discipline.
