For most pilots flying the mountains in San Diego, (and this is only Nik's opinion, NOT the official opinion of the SDHGPA) the short weekend course (Wilderness First Aid) is a superb start.
If you're going to get into anything longer than casual site flying, (looking at all you folks who are talking about vol-biv), you should seriously consider getting your WFR (Wilderness First Responder.)
